Mystery novels have been one of the most popular forms of literature in man's history. Spoken mystery stories date back to ancient times. Even Native American tribes practiced telling mystery tales as a part of their culture.
The mysteries are full of intrigue and this is probably the most notable reason they have maintained their popularity even today. They invoke thrill, suspense, anticipation and sometimes even fright in the reader. Modern mystery goes back to the 1800’s. The earlier works, such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series brought mystery mania to Europe and the US. Murder and detective mysteries remained popular in the 1900’s and continue today, probably with the inspiration of authors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen.
Since there are so many different kinds of mystery novels, their appeal to readers are expansive. There are historical mysteries based upon legend and fact. There are also science fiction mysteries, although today Sci-Fi has become more of a class on its own merits. Fantasy mysteries have also become popular very recently, such as the Harry Potter series, although have there are roots for this genre going back as far back as William Shakespeare’s A Mid Summers Night Dream.
With the advent of mass media, mystery stories have established a commanding position. Mystery works of many kinds have been popularized in the television and the movie industry. Mystery offers just too many plays and twists on human emotions not to be considered one of the finest forms of entertainment.
