Ellery Queen

Ellery Queen is a false name as well as a fictional character. Two cousins, Fred Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee, came up with Ellery Queen to write detective stories. For 42 years, Ellery Queen has been the pen name of both authors and a detective hero. There have been movies, radio shows and television shows based on Ellery Queen. The two cousins, especially Daniel Nathan, created and directed Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. The cousins were awarded the Grand Master Award for their work in the field of mystery by Mystery Writers of American in 1961. Dannay came up with the plots and clues, and Manfred wrote the stories.

Ellery Queen is one of the most important American mystery series. The two cousins created Ellery Queen in order to enter a writing contest. Ellery Queen lived in an apartment with his father, Inspector Richard Queen. Richard was a New York City policeman on the homicide unit. As the success of Ellery Queen grew, the fictional character changed. At first, the stories were mostly about plots and twists, but as time went on, humor was included.

Ellery Queen not only solved mysteries, he wrote about them as well. Living with his father gave Ellery Queen the opportunity to have access to police business, which was handy when solving mysteries. Fredrick Stokes published the cousins' first novel. Stokes would go on to release more than a dozen of the novels written by the two. At first, the identity of Ellery Queen was kept a secret. When going out in public, Dannay would wear a mask, as if he were protecting his identity.
