Sue Grafton was born on April 24, 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father is C.W. Grafton, who is also a novelist, and her mother is Vivian Harnsberger. Grafton had a sister named Ann, and they were both raised in Grafton's place of birth. Sue went on to college, and had many dead-end jobs.
She started writing when she was eighteen. Her writing produced six different stories, but, unfortunately, only two were published. Grafton was frustrated in not being as successful as she wanted to be and turned to writing screenplays. She started to write down her thoughts while going through a divorce and a horrible custody battle. She would become so enraged with her ex-husband that she would have thoughts of killing him. Sue's thoughts felt so real that she started to write them down in hopes of producing a good story.
Grafton has always liked mystery novels with similar titles, and once again her thoughts helped her a lot and she came up with the "Alphabet Novels." All the novels in this series are written in a woman's perspective. Her books are in 28 different countries and in almost as many languages. Grafton has even been approached to have some of her novels made into movies, but she has declined every time, saying she wants nothing else to do with Hollywood. It has even been said that she has told her children she would haunt them if they sold the rights when she passes away.
